But his ego meant he had to try and one up him. Plus Tommy Lee Jones really should have played the straight man to Jim Carrey. The major hurdle is it came after Burton and wasn't directed by him. If they had kept it to how it was originally intended, and left the darker stuff in, it would get a much higher rep. So, yeah I sense a little frustration on Joel Schumacher's part. The problem with Batman Forever is paçing and the film has plot holes because crucial scenes got cut. John Glover told a story where Schumacher yelled out "It's a cartoon people!" before calling action and that made it harder to act. So, it seems like he wanted to go the darker route the studio just got in his way. I was surprised to read after B&R he pratically begged the studio to do a year one story and they passed on him. Their mandate was "sell toys and have camp!!" So, I imagine Joel just threw up his hands and was like "Ok whatever". And I think Schumacher if given the chance could have done decent Batman. I get the feeling with Batman Forever there's a decent dark movie in there especially if you go by the deleted scenes. Poor Chris O'Donnell's career was ruined. And it's easy to blame him because he directed them after all. But is Joel Schumacher really to blame for the movies? He willingly took the blame and apologized for the movies. I have to admire how Jim Carrey, Tommy Lee Jones and Arnold just went with the camp with gusto. So, what do you think of these movies? I'll be the first to admit they're not the best movies but they're enjoyable on a silly level. So, yeah I sense a little frustration on Joel Schumacher's part.
